How to Choose the Right Inverter for Your Home Solar + Storage System

Adding a battery to your home energy system can be a smart choice for your family, providing financial benefits as well as important environmental and reliability benefits. Choosing the right equipment can make a big difference in the cost and performance of your solar plus storage system, and the inverter is one of the most important pieces. The solar/storage hybrid inverter is the control center of the energy system, helping make sure that your home gets the most out of your solar and your battery.

Four Benefits of Adding Storage to Your Home's PV Solar System

1). Maximize self-consumption of your home's solar energy
If you want to use the majority of the power produced by the solar panels on your roof to power your home, you need a battery to charge during the day and discharge at night.

In the example illustrated in the graph below, see how the battery can help reduce the amount of power drawn from the grid by shifting the peak power demand. The small pink peaks that occur each evening on the positive side of the y-axis are the only moments where this home needs to draw power from the grid.

2). Improve the reliability and quality of your power supply

Voltage fluctuations and power interruptions can be problematic and annoying for sensitive equipment such as wifi routers. A battery system can provide rapid response to minor or major power interruptions, creating a user experience that is smooth and continuous.

3). Reduce Your Energy Bills By Skipping the Highest Rate Periods
Many utilities structure their rates so that electricity costs more at set times during the day. With a battery system, you can program your system to stop drawing from the grid during these high-cost periods and avoid paying more dollars per watt.

4). Provide Emergency Backup Power for your Home in Case of an Outage
There are many reasons that the electricity grid can fail unexpectedly, whether it's because of a fire, a storm, or just a particularly hot day. With an off-grid battery system, you can stay online and keep your critical power supply running.

How To Program A Solar + Storage System

As the control center of the solar plus storage system, the solar/storage hybrid inverter can be programmed to four different modes to maximize the four benefits listed above:

Auto Mode: During the day, the power generated by

the PV system is used in the following order:

FIRST - Feed the home power demand;

SECOND - Charge the battery;

THIRD - Export the surplus power to the grid.

At night, the battery powers the home.

If the power supply from the battery is not sufficient,

the system will switch automatically to

the grid to meet the demand.

Time Charge Mode: Allows you to program battery

charging and discharging times according

to the price of electricity

and your household power consumption habits.

Battery Reserve Mode: This is a battery retention mode

to keep the battery fully charged, in case of grid failure.

Its purpose is to have enough reserve power

to meet the critical load in case of sudden power

failures due to storms, fires, or other unforseen

circumstances.

Off Grid Mode: In this mode, the battery is used as a

backup power supply when the grid fails.

The battery will also recharge with the power generated

by the PV system in this mode.

How to Choose the Right Inverter

The inverter has a critical role in the solar and storage system. It can convert solar panel energy, supply load and manage battery charging and discharging. It can also optimize the economics of the power supply system. The inverter is roughly equivalent in cost to the solar panels and to the battery itself, generally making up 20-25% of the total system hardware cost.

One final consideration is to make sure that your inverter is compatible with the battery and other components of the system. Solis inverters are currently compatible with BYD, LG Chem, Pylon, Dyness, and other battery brands. Check with your installer for system compatibility.
